Diabetic Clinic
|
Lead by Dr O’Connor and Practice Nurse Eilidh Ward
How the clinic works
The practice diabetes clinic is aimed at reviewing our type 2
diabetics (previously called late onset diabetes) at regular six
monthly intervals. You will be invited for routine fasting blood
tests with our health care assistant Ann Cook. Following these blood
tests, Ann will arrange an appointment in the practice diabetes
clinic. We offer a joint appointment with Eilidh Ward, our practice
nurse, and Dr O’Connor, the diabetes lead, for an annual review. The
6 monthly reviews are undertaken by Eilidh. Any other necessary
reviews will be arranged on an ad hoc basis by the clinicians.
Clinic Times
Tuesday mornings and Wednesday lunchtimes between 1pm and 2pm
although alternative arrangements can be made if these times do not
suit your work schedule.
What happens at these appointments?
At your review the nurse will check your feet, blood pressure,
weight and waist circumference. She will discuss any lifestyle
changes you may need to undertake ( diet, weight reduction, smoking
cessation etc) and discuss any concerns or worries you have about
your condition. Dr O’Connor will review your medication and blood
results and agree a management plan with you.
All diabetics should have yearly eye checks at the hospital DECS
clinic. Any newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic will also be offered a
referral to a local structured education programme (DESMOND).
What to bring to your diabetic appointments?
- An early morning urine sample ( this means the first urine
sample after you get up)
- Any questions you have about your condition
Please feel free to bring a relative or a friend to your
appointment.
Flu Vaccination
Once a year in the winter months you will be offered a flu
vaccination. As a diabetic it is important that you consider this
vaccination to help protect you against the flu and the possible
complications arising from having the flu. For more information on
the flu vaccination please view the following website:
